On the evening of May 8th, the Kansas City community came together for something truly special: the NextStep KC Annual Gala, A Night to Stand, 2026, a night of celebration, gratitude, and unwavering belief in the power of recovery. The energy in the room was a testament to what happens when a community rallies behind a mission worth fighting for.

As the event photography team, we had the privilege of watching it all unfold. The laughter, the heartfelt moments, the standing ovations, and the quiet conversations between clients and supporters that said everything without a single word. I love both attending and working these events because the Kansas City community really knows how to show up.

What Is NextStep Kansas City?

The evening began with cocktails and connection. Supporters, board members, sponsors, and clients filled the room, visiting and reviewing the silent auction

Over dinner, guests heard directly from NextStep KC Executive Director Chris Smith and clients. They told stories of progress, perseverance, and the remarkable things that happen when someone is given the tools, the community, and the belief that recovery doesn't have to stop.

These weren't abstract statistics. These were neighbors, friends, and family members standing up and saying: this place changed my life.

The auction and Fund-a-Need brought incredible generosity to the floor, with guests rallying to fund client memberships, adaptive equipment upgrades, and facility improvements that will make a direct difference in the months ahead.

Why This Work Matters

Recovery from paralysis is not a sprint; it's a lifelong commitment. The individuals who walk through the doors of NextStep Kansas City's Overland Park facility aren't looking for someone to tell them what they can't do. They're looking for a team that believes in what they can do, and the tools to prove it.

Every dollar raised at the gala goes directly toward client memberships and scholarships, so cost is never a barrier to recovery, cutting-edge adaptive equipment, including FES bikes and NMES devices, certified Activity-Based Trainer staffing, and ongoing facility improvements at the Overland Park center.

The impact doesn't end when the gala does. It continues every morning a client shows up, every milestone celebrated, every function regained.

The gala was one night. The work is every day.
